Langer shot a 6-fewer than 66 to meet the tournament's 36-hole report at 14-fewer than 130, 4 shots obvious of Mark O'Meara, Russ Cochran, Fred Funk and Mark Calcavecchia.

Langer shot out near to the gates, birdying his earliest three holes. He finished the sleep of his top nine in pars, proceeding to stumbling somewhat, bogeying holes 10 and 11. But he bounced back again with additional birdies on Nos. 12, 14 and 15.

"If I had avoided these two bogeys, would have been great," he said. "But they were silly bogeys. With a pitching wedge in my hand, I shouldn't make bogey from the middle of the fairway."

Funk and Calcavecchia will hold out alongside Langer using the last group.

"He doesn't beat himself, that's probably the biggest thing," Funk said of Langer. "He just goes out there and stays with the game plan. He has a game plan, and I don't think he ever varies from it."

O'Meara concurred: "This person is in actuality a hard as they come, and he's confirmed that over the years. He'll be considered a hard competitor tomorrow, and he's not in actuality on the way to back again up, so we're on the way to need to go low."
